Indian Club Rhythm (1939), by Harold Edgerton.

Edgerton may not be as well-known as a photographer as he ought to be, but his contributions to expanding what you can do with photography are among the greatest. Not only was he a major pioneer in strobe photography, but he was also a master of high speed photography and many other techniques. The company he started also invented the rapatronic shutter, which was used to photograph atom bomb tests.

MIT (where he taught) has a great website dedicated to his work. It’s got lots of amazing photographs and plenty of information on the many techniques he helped pioneer.
